Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ), a leader in the fight to reunite the Goldman family, today applauded the Brazilian Supreme Court decision that Sean Goldman must be returned to his father.

"The Brazilian justice system has made the right decision, and I urge Brazilian authorities to ensure that the court's decision is carried out safely and swiftly," stated Lautenberg. "We have all fought for Sean, but it is David Goldman's perseverance over five difficult years that pushed Brazil to meet its obligations under international law."

Lautenberg has been working hard over the last year to reunite the Goldman family. In January of 2009, Sen. Lautenberg personally met with David Goldman and then U.S. Ambassador to Brazil Clifford Sobel in separate meetings about the abduction case. Earlier this year, Lautenberg and Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) sent a letter calling on Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to follow international law and assist in the return of Sean Goldman to his father. The Senators also authored a resolution that passed the Senate in March urging Brazil to comply with the requirements of the Hague Convention and reunite Sean Goldman with his father in the United States.
